The Dangers of Dust

why is dust dangerous?

There’s nothing like that first hot day in the middle of spring. You’re wearing your favorite short-sleeved shirt, your path to work is covered in fallen flower petals, and the sun is shining bright above you. It’s not quite hot enough to turn on the air conditioning, so when you get to work, you turn on the ceiling fans. To your horror, it begins to snow…no, not snowflakes. Not flower petals. Dust.

Your employees or coworkers may have a good laugh, but dust that goes unnoticed is no joke! If you don’t have cleaners taking care of your office on a regular basis, your health may be at risk.

Why is dust dangerous?

Dust particles are not just made up of skin cells, hair, and pollen- although that sounds pretty nasty already. When dust is stirred up from a surface, there could be toxic chemicals swirling up along with it. Pesticides, phthalates, and even flame retardants can be found in dust. Researchers have found that ⅔ of flame retardants (PBDEs) found in adults appear to be coming from household dust. You could breathe in these particles or your skin may absorb them. Itchy eyes, runny noses, coughing, asthma, eczema, sinus problems– dust particles can cause all of these health problems. Dust mites can significantly impact the immune system if exposure is high.

What should you do?

You can’t get rid of all of the dust in your office, unfortunately. The best you can do is try to keep it at a minimum, to reduce your exposure to toxins. Air filters and purifiers are excellent for keeping irritants at bay, and of course, dusting frequently is highly recommended.
